When Katharine’s ex-lover Veronica came to the gallery about a year after Katharine and I reconnected, she infused our space with tension. I walked in on them in the heat of a fight and didn’t like the negativity in the room. My room.

Out of a protective instinct, I interfered, stayed and played gracious hostess.

The problem quickly became apparent even though it was never spoken. Veronica believed that Katharine and I were lovers. In love with each other. Well, maybe we were.

After Veronica left, Katharine looked at me in dismay. “I am not sure what happened.”

“Go after her,” I said.

Katharine nodded. “I should. I should…”

“Why don’t you?”

“What’s the point? We’re not meant to be together. She has two young children and a life in Chicago. Our worlds are nowhere close to the same galaxy.”

“Katharine,” I said, brushing my hand against hers, touching her like I rarely did. “Too many people think in terms of forever, but meant to be together does not have to equal forever. If she can help you in this moment, if she can help you for one week, for one month, seize that opportunity. Is that not what the two of you used to do?”

She swallowed. “Yes. You’re right.”

I don’t know if Katharine sought her out that night. I never asked.
